Set the Perfect Holiday Scene With an Organized Custom Closet

The holidays are a joyful time filled with parties and gatherings for us all. But from my experience, they can also bring stress when it comes to preparing your home and finding the perfect outfits. This year, I encourage you to get ahead of the game by organizing your custom closet. With some simple tips I share below for maximizing your space, you can create an efficient haven that will help make your holiday season magical.

  • Do a deep clean and purge
  • Evaluate your holiday wardrobe needs
  • Use customized storage solutions
  • Strategically categorize clothing
  • Beautifully display accessories
  • Install proper lighting
  • Maintain organization

Do a Deep Clean and Purge of Your Closet

I recommend you start by giving your entire closet a deep clean. This will provide you with a fresh slate to work with. Take everything out and vacuum the floor, wipe down the walls and shelves, clean the clothing rods, and make sure the lighting is dust-free. As you put items back, be ruthless about purging anything you don't absolutely love or need. I always ask myself these questions:

  • When did I wear this last?
  • Does this still fit my body and style?
  • Is this item poor quality, stained, or damaged?
  • Once your purging is complete, you'll have room to organize and make way for new holiday outfits.

Evaluate Your Holiday Wardrobe Needs

Consider what types of holiday events you'll be attending this season: formal parties, casual gatherings, family events, etc. Make sure your closet contains the apparel options you need for each occasion. I suggest creating a list of any missing pieces you need to shop for, like a new holiday dress.

When making additions, I opt for versatile, high-quality pieces I can mix, match, and wear for years. I encourage you to do the same to build a classic holiday wardrobe that stands the test of time.

Use Customized Storage Solutions

Take advantage of every inch of space with storage solutions tailored to your needs. Install a double hanging rod to double the closet’s hanging capacity. Use vertical dividers on shelves to neatly store sweaters, pants, and other folded items. Sliding drawers are great for keeping clothes accessible but dust-free.

For accessories, I use a mounted jewelry armoire and hanging tie/belt rack to stay organized. Space-saving velvet hangers prevent tightly packed clothing rods. Hanging shoe organizers inside your closet doors maximizes vertical room.

Strategically Categorize Your Clothing

I group my clothing by category to easily create outfits on busy mornings. You can arrange your tops together, then pants, dresses, outerwear, etc. Installing shelving helps delineate categories. I also recommend grouping items by color to coordinate pieces efficiently.

Group items by color to coordinate pieces efficiently. Apartment Therapy lists several benefits of grouping clothing by color. I find that locating clothing by color allows you to get ready faster–if you know you need a green shirt, just head to where the green items are. You’ll also be able to see your items more easily and find yourself wearing more colors.

Hang formal wear towards the back of your closet to prevent wrinkles. And store off-season items you won't need in breathable containers under the bed or on a shelf. Only keep current seasonal essentials in your closet.

Beautifully Display Your Accessories

Your accessories deserve their own polished storage for quick grabbing on your way out the door. I use jewelry stands, wall hooks, and armoires to neatly organize and display earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more. For scarves, gloves, and seasonal accessories, specialty drawers and shelving work wonderfully.

Designate space for carefully hanging your bags, hats, and belts. When accessories are displayed with care, the process of choosing them becomes a joy each day.

Install Proper Lighting

Lighting is essential for selecting holiday outfits and seeing small accessories. In addition to making sure the closet has adequate overhead lighting, I like to install lighting inside drawers and cabinets so hidden spaces don't get overlooked.

Mirrors multiply the light while allowing you to view your outfit from all angles. And lighted rods illuminate hanging clothes beautifully. With enough lighting, you'll look perfectly polished for every celebration this season!

Maintain Organization

Keeping your closet orderly throughout the holidays prevents stressful morning outfit searches. After each use, take a moment to put pieces back properly - hang up formalwear, refold sweaters, and return accessories to their homes.

I’ve noticed that doing quick tidying tasks on a regular basis and donating or consigning anything not worn keeps the need to deep clean the closet to a minimum. Entering the new year with an organized closet makes way for more holiday cheer next season!

Conclusion

With some strategic planning and customized storage, you can optimize your closet space this holiday season. By regularly purging unused items, categorizing them intelligently, using specialized storage, and maintaining organization, you'll eliminate clutter and excess to make room for what you truly love. I hope your organized closet will help set the scene for relaxed, joyful holiday celebrations all season long!
